Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake: Dunhuang's Desert Miracle

Just south of Dunhuang, where the Gobi gives way to a sea of golden dunes, lies one of China's most magical sights: Crescent Lake (Yueyaquan), a spring-fed crescent of clear water that has survived for millennia in the arms of the Singing Sand Mountain (Mingshashan). The dunes sing when the wind moves the sand; the lake never dries, never silts up, and never drowns. Desert and water, in perfect balance, for over 2,000 years.

The Miracle: Why the Lake Survives

How does a lake survive in the middle of a desert? The answer is the shape of the surrounding dunes: they form a natural wind tunnel that blows sand up and away from the lake rather than into it. The lake sits in a low basin, and the prevailing winds carry the sand over the rim instead of filling the hollow. Add underground springs, and you get a crescent of water that has endured while the desert shifted around it.

What to Do at Mingsha Mountain

  • Climb the dunes — walk or take the dune "ladder" to the top for the classic view of Crescent Lake nestled below; the sand is soft, so the climb is more effort than it looks
  • Desert sunset — stay for sunset: the dunes turn gold, and the lake reflects the last light
  • Camel rides — ride a camel along the desert route, the classic Silk Road photo
  • Sandboarding and sand buggies — for the adventurous, the dunes offer sliding and motorized fun
  • The singing sand — slide down a steep dune face and the sand emits a low hum — the "singing" that gives the mountain its name

Practical Information
