If you have seen photographs of China's "rainbow mountains" — great striped ridges of red, orange, yellow and turquoise layered like a giant cake — you were looking at Zhangye Danxia in western Gansu. Officially the Zhangye National Geopark (a UNESCO Global Geopark), this landscape of colorful folded strata was created over millions of years as mineral layers were pressed, tilted and eroded into sculpted ridges. It is one of the most surreal natural sights in China, and best seen in the golden light of sunrise or sunset.

Where the Colors Come From

The rainbow layers are the result of geology, not paint: millions of years ago, sandstones and mudstones of different mineral compositions (iron oxide for the reds and yellows, magnesium and other minerals for the blues and greens) were deposited in layers, then folded by tectonic pressure into the tilted bands you see today. Erosion carved the soft rock into rounded ridges, valleys and gullies, exposing the colorful strata like slices of a layered cake.

How to See It: The Viewing Platforms

The geopark is divided into several scenic areas, each reached by shuttle bus and viewed from elevated walkways and platforms. You don't hike through the color — you look down on it.

• Rainbow Mountain (the classic view) — the main area with the broadest and most colorful ridges
• The viewing platforms — four main platforms at different heights; walk the elevated boardwalks between them
• Sunrise and sunset are everything — the colors pop dramatically in low-angle light; midday sun washes them out
• Boardwalk rules — stay on the walkways and platforms; the soft rock is easily damaged and is strictly protected

Practical Information

• Getting there — the geopark is about 40 km from Zhangye city; buses and taxis run from the city, or join a day tour
• Getting to Zhangye — high-speed rail on the Lanzhou–Xinjiang line: about 4 hours from Lanzhou, 1.5 hours from Jiayuguan
• Time needed — a half day covers the main area; go for sunrise or late afternoon, not midday
• Weather — best after light rain, when the colors are deepest and the sky is clean; avoid sandstorm days
