Jiayuguan: The Western End of the Great Wall

At the far western edge of the Gansu corridor, where the desert meets the snow-capped Qilian Mountains, stands Jiayuguan — the western terminus of the Ming Great Wall and the "First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven." For five centuries, this massive fortress was the gateway between China and the Central Asian Silk Road: the last Chinese city a traveler saw before entering the desert, and the first they saw on returning home.

The Fortress: A Complete Military City

Unlike most Great Wall sections, Jiayuguan is not just a wall — it's a complete fortress complex: inner and outer walls, moats, watchtowers, barracks, a general's residence and a temple to the God of War. The layout was designed so that an enemy who breached the outer gate would be trapped inside the inner courtyard, exposed to archers on all sides. It is the best-preserved example of Ming dynasty military architecture in China.

Beyond the Fortress: The Overhanging Wall

A few kilometers west of the fortress lies the Overhanging Great Wall (Xuanbi Changcheng), a section that climbs a sheer cliff like a ribbon against the rock. Built in the Ming dynasty to seal the mountain pass west of the fortress, it is steep, narrow and thrilling to climb — with panoramic views over the desert and snow mountains. It's the "photo wall" of Jiayuguan: empty desert behind you, Great Wall snaking up the cliff ahead.

• The First Beacon Tower — the "First Mound Under Heaven," the westernmost watchtower of the Great Wall, is another 20 minutes beyond
