For centuries, these huge wooden wheels — some over 20 meters in diameter — lifted water from the Yellow River to irrigate the fields of the Gansu corridor. How the Lanzhou Waterwheel Works

The Lanzhou waterwheel is a masterpiece of simple engineering. The current of the Yellow River turns a giant wheel built from local wood; as the wheel rotates, hollow bamboo tubes and wooden buckets fixed to its rim scoop up river water at the bottom and carry it to the top, where it pours into a channel leading to the irrigation ditches. A single large wheel could lift enough water to irrigate hundreds of hectares — no fuel, no moving metal parts, just the river's own power.
