Yandang Mountains: Zhejiang's Rock Peaks and Waterfalls
The Painter's Mountain
Yandang, on the coast of southern Zhejiang, has been a subject for Chinese landscape painting for centuries, and the reason becomes clear on the walk: rhyolite peaks that change silhouette as you move, caves hollowed into the rock, and waterfalls that drop between them. It is a mountain of viewpoints rather than a summit, and it is considerably quieter than Huangshan or Zhangjiajie.
The Scenic Areas
The mountain splits into several sections, each with its own entrance and character. Lingfeng is the peaks and caves, with a night-time walk that turns the same rocks into silhouettes; Lingyan has the largest waterfall and the temple below it; and Dalongqiu holds the highest cascade in the range. Two days covers all three without hurrying, and one day can cover two.
Walking and Timing
Paths are stone-stepped and well maintained, with cable cars in some sections, so the walking is manageable for most visitors. Spring and autumn are the best seasons, and the waterfalls are strongest after rain — a trade-off, since wet weather also means cloud on the peaks. Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends.
Practical Notes
Yandang is reached by high-speed rail from Wenzhou, Ningbo and Hangzhou, with station-to-mountain buses and taxis. Accommodation clusters near the main entrances, ranging from guesthouses to comfortable hotels. Combine the mountain with Ningbo's old town or Putuoshan for a coastal Zhejiang loop.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days does Yandang need?
Two days for the three main scenic areas, one day for two of them. The night walk at Lingfeng is worth an overnight stay.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring and autumn. Waterfalls are strongest after rain, but cloud can hide the peaks; summer is hot and wet, winter quiet and cold.
How do I get there?
By high-speed rail to Yandangshan station from Wenzhou, Ningbo or Hangzhou, then by local bus or taxi to the scenic areas.
