Getting There and the Island Rhythm

The island has no private cars for visitors — traffic is electric shuttles, bicycles and feet, which is exactly why the calm survives. Ferries cross from the Zhoushan-area mainland ports throughout the day; tickets and the island's entry pass are the two things to book ahead in peak season. Once landed, the rhythm is simple: shuttle to the main temple cluster, walk between the rest, and let the crowds cluster around the famous halls while you take the paths between them.

The Temples, in the Right Order

The island's temple complexes are its spine: the great monastery cluster with its multi-hall courtyards and the famous thousand-armed icon, the hillside temples above it, and the southern headland's towering bronze statue of the bodhisattva looking out to sea. Start at the largest complex early, work uphill through the quieter halls, and finish at the giant statue in the late afternoon light. Pilgrims walk the route with incense; travelers can simply follow.

Beaches, Paths and the Quiet Coast

Between the temples, the island keeps beaches and coastal paths that most day-trippers never reach — the sand is good, the water views are open, and the thousand-step path to the summit reward those who climb with the whole archipelago below. The island's west-facing shore is the sunset side. Allow time between sights for exactly this: the coast is not a footnote here, it is half the reason the mountain is sacred.

A Day Trip or the Overnight

Day-tripping works but wastes the island's best hours: the ferries dump the crowds at mid-morning and reclaim them by late afternoon, so the temples are at their emptiest at dawn and dusk. Staying overnight — in the modest hotels and guesthouses near the main cluster — buys the incense-filled early morning and the sunset shore, and turns the visit from a queue into a pilgrimage. The island fits neatly between Hangzhou's West Lake and the Zhejiang coast's water towns.
