A Port With a Library

Ningbo has been a working port since the Tang dynasty, and it has the marks of a trading city: an old town where merchants' houses and guild halls survive, a riverfront that still moves cargo, and a food culture built on what comes off the boats. Its most surprising sight is literary — a private library built by one family and kept intact for centuries, one of the oldest and most celebrated in China.

The Old Town and the Library

The Tianyi Pavilion, founded in the sixteenth century, is the centrepiece: a garden compound built to house and protect books, with the architecture designed for fire prevention and conservation, and a museum that explains the family's collecting. Around it, the old town's lanes, temples and guild halls are walkable and quiet, and the city museum fills in the port's long history.

The Waterfront and the Coast

Ningbo's waterfront has been redeveloped into a pleasant promenade, and the old foreign concession area preserves nineteenth-century buildings from the treaty-port era. Beyond the city, the coast and islands — including the route out to Putuoshan — are the practical reason many travelers pass through, and the seafood is the reason many stay an extra night.

Practical Notes

Ningbo sits on the high-speed network, close to Hangzhou and Shanghai, and it is the mainland gateway for the Putuoshan ferries, which makes it a natural stop on a Zhejiang coast itinerary. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; summer brings typhoon-season rain. One day covers the old town, the library and the waterfront; two adds the coast.
