Where Yunnan Begins

Kunming is the airport-and-rail hub through which almost every Yunnan trip passes, and it deserves more than a transit night. Its altitude gives it a mild, spring-like climate year-round — hence the name "Spring City" — its food is among the most varied in China, and its markets sell the flowers, mushrooms and minority textiles that define the province. Give it a day or two and it stops being a gateway and starts being a destination.

Parks, Markets and the City

The city's parks are its living rooms: Green Lake for morning walks and birdlife, the lakeside parks for boats and crowds, and the flower and bird markets for the sheer range of what grows here. The provincial museum is excellent on Yunnan's archaeology and minority cultures, and the old streets around the centre have the teahouses, snack stalls and cross-border food that make the city worth wandering.

The Stone Forest and Day Trips

The Stone Forest, an hour and a half away, is the classic excursion: a karst landscape of limestone pinnacles that reads like a stone city, best visited early. Other day options include the lake villages, hot springs and the minority villages in the surrounding hills — all reachable by road, and all quieter on weekdays.

Practical Notes

Kunming is the hub for high-speed rail to Dali and Lijiang and flights to the rest of the province, so most itineraries start here and loop onwards. The altitude is moderate but worth noting for the first day, and sunscreen matters at this latitude. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; the summer rains are real, and winter is mild and clear.
