China Inbound Daily: A Drama Filled a Paper Town

Oct 19,2026

China Inbound Daily — 19 October 2026

A craft shop at a paper park in Anhui was taking more than RMB 30,000 a day this summer, twice its usual rate. Six readings from the fortnight to 19 October, and what each one changes for a trip being planned now.

A Television Drama Sent 320,000 People to a Paper Town

Jingxian, a county in southern Anhui, counted 189,100 visitors at its Xuan paper park over the summer, up 63.44%. While a prime-time drama filmed on location was airing, the county logged 3.2072 million arrivals and RMB 1.657 billion in tourism revenue, and the park shop took more than RMB 30,000 a day. Three routes and 32 experience packages went on sale during the run.

Xuan paper takes 108 steps from bark to finished sheet, mostly by hand at a vat of water. A visitor can pull a sheet there, which turned viewers into customers. Our guide to the craft villages covers the workshops that take walk-ins.

What it means: a screen credit buys attention, and a bookable hour at a workbench converts it. The film-location route model only works while the set is still standing.

Beijing Sold 39.7% More to 32.4% More People

Beijing hosted 3.86 million inbound visitors from January to July, up 32.4%, and they spent US$5.28 billion, up 39.7%. The city moved up two places to fifth in the World Tourism Cities ranking, and held second on the smart-city index.

The gap shows up at street level. One Beijing hotel turned calligraphy, paper-cutting and a bilingual tour of Edgar Snow's former residence into a daily programme; inbound room nights rose 121% and inbound bookings reached 82% of its total.

What it means: a city with full rooms is selling the hours between them. The paid extras - a guide who can explain a hall, a workshop, a late opening - are now what a good itinerary is made of.

Visa-Free Entry Passed 23 Million and Slowed Down

Visa-free entries passed 23 million in the first eight months of 2026, up 26% and more than three-quarters of all foreign arrivals. Unilateral treatment for 45 countries runs to the end of the year; the 240-hour transit waiver covers 57 and works differently.

The rate matters more than the total. The same measure grew 30.6% across the first half, so June to August ran below the spring pace while absolute numbers kept climbing. Choosing between the two entry rules still decides more trips than the headline count.

What it means: the door is as wide as it will get. The next gain comes after landing - a timed slot that is actually available, a connection that does not eat a day.

A Visitor Spends 29.1% of What the World Spends

A study from the Ministry of Commerce research institute, released at the 2026 services trade fair, puts China's revenue per international visitor at US$357.3 - 29.1% of the global average. It sorts the problem into five dimensions and finds most headroom in service quality and experience. Ctrip served close to 15 million inbound travellers in the first half, with orders up 95%.

Arrivals are already at record levels; what is thin is the nights and cities each arrival pays for. A four-day route that ends at the airport spends less than a six-day one that adds a province. Our seven-day canal heritage route is built on that arithmetic.

What it means: the growth available this year is depth, not volume. Anything that adds a night moves the number that sits at 29.1%.

Heilongjiang Found a Second Season

Autumn search volume for Heilongjiang rose 121% year on year in one week. Hotel booking interest climbed 40% in the Greater Khingan range and 39% in Yichun, and Fliggy put provincial hotel bookings up close to 70%. Inbound small-group enquiries pairing autumn colour with a craft element were up 92% in September, with Hong Kong and Macao, Malaysia and Russia among the top sources.

The colour window runs roughly mid-September to the first week of October, three months before the ski season the province is known for. A region with two seasons keeps guides, drivers and heated rooms on the books through October. Timing detail sits in our season calendar.

What it means: the northeast is no longer a winter-only add-on. For a long-haul visitor already flying to Beijing, a September week in the forests is a credible second stop.

Sanya Raised Rates While the Country Cut Them

In July, Sanya's high-star hotels ran 76.5% occupancy at an average rate of RMB 995, up 10.5%. January to May revenue per available room rose 18.6%, of which 14.2 points came from rate. A Yalong Bay resort trading for close to thirty years held above 90% occupancy at RMB 3,000 a night, while national summer revenue per available room fell about 3%.

The mix explains the divergence: Russian-speaking arrivals grew 60%, Malaysia, Belarus and Uzbekistan each more than doubled. Peak winter weeks are the ones to fix first, and checking that a property takes foreign guests matters more on Hainan.

What it means: rate strength in Sanya is a signal about who is arriving, not about the weather. Book early; the calmer weeks fall outside school holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a county like Jingxian practical without a private car?

It is, with one transfer. Jingxian sits between Huangshan and Xuancheng on the high-speed line, and the paper park is a short taxi from the station. The constraint is the workshop timetable: vats run in fixed daily batches, so book around the batch - the craft villages guide sets out which workshops take walk-ins.

Should I treat autumn in the northeast as a substitute for the ski season?

No - these are different trips on the same map. The colour window closes around the first week of October and the ski season opens in December. What overlaps is logistics: same airports, same drivers, much of the same hotel stock.

How early do Sanya winter dates need booking?

Earlier than the rest of the mainland coast, because the island sells to several source markets at once and the peak weeks follow school calendars in each of them. Fix the dates first, then the route, and confirm the foreign-guest question at booking. Our planning model sequences the two.
