The Rule Behind the Refusal
Chinese hotels register guests with the local public security system, and registration requires a property set up to accept international travellers. Big international brands, most four- and five-star city hotels and business hotels are. Some budget chains, small guesthouses and apartment rentals are not - and that is the failure travellers discover at the front desk, with luggage, at 10pm.
How to Check Before Booking
Ask the property directly. Message the hotel through the booking platform and ask one question: *do you accept foreign guests, and can you register a foreign passport?* Keep the answer in writing.
Read the listing's fine print. Some platforms flag it; many do not. Absence of a warning is not confirmation.
Check the location, not just the star rating. Business districts and transport hubs are the safest bets. Remote scenic areas are where the exceptions live.
Have a backup for every night. Not paranoia - in smaller towns it is normal to hold two options until one confirms in writing.
At Check-In
Registration is quick and routine: passport, a registration form, sometimes a photo. You may be asked for a deposit against incidentals, returned at check-out. Some properties keep your passport overnight to register it; this is normal, but ask for a receipt if you would rather keep it.
When a Property Says No
It is not a scam and usually not discrimination - it is a licence category. Options: move to a property that can register you, or ask the original hotel to recommend a nearby alternative. Can I stay in an Airbnb-style apartment in China?
Sometimes, but registration rules make it unreliable. Confirm in writing that the host can register foreign guests, or choose a serviced apartment hotel instead.

Some ask to hold it briefly for registration. Ask for a receipt, or offer to accompany staff to the registration step. It is routine, not a red flag.
What about homestays in villages?
