The Northeast's Capital

Shenyang is the largest city in China's northeast and the natural place to start with the region: it has the imperial palace the Manchus built before they took Beijing, republican-era commercial streets, and a food culture that developed for long winters — pickles, stews, dumplings and grilled skewers. It is also the gateway to the snow country further north and east.

The Palace and the Old City

The Mukden Palace is the headline: a compact imperial complex smaller than Beijing's but with its own distinctive mix of Manchu, Mongol and Han architecture, and far fewer visitors. Walk from there through the old city lanes, then to the republican-era Zhongjie commercial street and the mansion of the Zhang family, which together tell the story of the city between empires.

Winter and the Snow Country

From December to February the region turns properly cold, and the payoff is snow: ski areas and riverside parks within a short drive, and the ice cities of Harbin and Changchun a few hours north by high-speed rail. Shenyang works as the warm base — hotels, food and transport — for a winter route rather than the snow destination itself.

Eating in the Northeast

Northeastern cooking is generous and built for cold: sour pickled cabbage with pork, stewed fish, dumplings in quantity, and grilled skewers in the evening. Portions are large, prices are low, and the regional beer culture is real. Noodle and dumpling shops fill up at breakfast.

Practical Notes

Winter (December–February) is the season to come if you want snow, with temperatures well below freezing; summer is warm and green, and autumn is short and clear. Shenyang is a rail hub with direct trains to Beijing, Harbin and Dalian, and the airport connects to most major cities.
