Beijing and Chengde in 4 Days: Capital and Summer Resort

Two Courts, Four Days

Beijing and Chengde were designed to work together: the Qing emperors governed from the capital and retreated to Chengde's mountain resort each summer, and the rail link now makes the pairing easy. Four days is enough for the essential Beijing — the Forbidden City axis, the hutongs and one Great Wall section — plus a night in Chengde for the resort and the temples around it.

Days 1–2: Beijing

Day one is the imperial axis: the Forbidden City (booked ahead), the square and the parks that frame them, then the hutongs on foot for the evening. Day two is the Great Wall — one section, early, with time to walk it properly — and, on the way back, a stop that interests you rather than a checklist.

Day 3: Rail to Chengde

Morning train, a couple of hours, and you are in the resort town: the Mountain Resort is a walled landscape of lakes, plains and wooded hills built as the court's summer retreat, and the surrounding temple clusters — several in Tibetan and Mongolian styles — were built to receive visiting dignitaries. An afternoon and a full morning do it justice.

Day 4: Temples and Return

Use the morning for the Putuo Zongcheng and Puning temples, the two most imposing of the outer eight, then take an afternoon train back and a final Beijing evening — duck, dumplings or a hutong courtyard meal. Travellers flying home from Beijing will find the return leg easy; those continuing onward can connect via the capital's rail hubs.

Practical Notes

Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons; Beijing's summer is hot and Chengde exists precisely because the emperors wanted cooler air, so July and August work here better than in most Chinese cities. Book the Forbidden City and the resort in advance, and expect to walk a lot at the Wall.
