Sanfang Qixiang: Fuzhou's Ancient Lanes of Three and Seven (2026)
Sanfang Qixiang: Fuzhou's Ancient Neighborhood of Three Lanes and Seven Alleys
In the heart of Fuzhou, Fujian's capital, lies Sanfang Qixiang — "Three Lanes and Seven Alleys" — the best-preserved ancient neighborhood in China south of the Yangtze. Here, rows of white-walled, black-tiled houses from the Ming and Qing dynasties line narrow lanes that have been walked continuously for over a thousand years. It is the only ancient block in China's southern cities still intact as a whole neighborhood — a living slice of traditional Fujian life.
Opening hours, highlights and visiting tips verified August 2026.
The Layout: Three Lanes, Seven Alleys
The name describes the neighborhood's structure: three long north-south lanes (Yijin, Wenru, Guanglu) on one side, and seven narrower alleys (Yangqiao, Langguan, Ta, Huang, Anmin, Gong, Jibi) on the other, all connected by east-west cross streets. It was once home to Fuzhou's scholar-gentry class, and more than 200 historical buildings survive — more than any other ancient neighborhood in China.
- The lanes — wider and more formal, lined with the mansions of officials and scholars
- The alleys — narrower and livelier, with traditional courtyard houses, teahouses and craft workshops
- The great houses — many have been restored and opened as museums and cultural spaces
Highlights
- The Lin Zexu Memorial — dedicated to the Qing-dynasty official who resisted the opium trade; his childhood home is preserved here
- Bingshan Hall — the elegant study of a Qing scholar, now a cultural venue with classical gardens
- The folk museum houses — restored residences showing traditional Fuzhou furniture, lacquerware and daily life
- Night lights — the neighborhood is at its most atmospheric after dark, when the lanterns come on and the lanes empty
- Local flavors — try Fuzhou fish balls (fish paste dumplings), lychee pork and the sweet ume tea (青红酒)
Planning Your Visit
- How long — half a day covers the lanes and key houses; an evening visit adds atmosphere
- Getting there — in central Fuzhou, served by the metro (Line 1, Dongjiekou station) and buses
- Combine with — Fuzhou is the gateway to Fujian's coast: the tulou, Xiamen and the islands are all within a few hours by train
