Wuyi Mountain: Bamboo Rafts, Red Cliffs and the Birthplace of Tea Culture

In the northwest corner of Fujian province, Wuyi Mountain (Wuyishan) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of unusual beauty: a river curling through a canyon of sheer red sandstone cliffs, forests that have survived for millions of years, and the tea terraces that produced the famous Wuyi rock oolong. It is a landscape that has inspired Chinese art for a thousand years — and a day on a bamboo raft through the Nine-Bend River is one of the most peaceful experiences in China.

Raft bookings, trail access and tea season verified August 2026.

The Nine-Bend River Raft Trip

The signature experience at Wuyishan is the bamboo raft ride down the Nine-Bend River (Jiuquxi). Flat bamboo rafts, poled by two boatmen, drift through the canyon for about 90 minutes while the red cliffs rise on either side. The rafts seat up to eight people, and the trip is calm, shaded and unforgettable — the river is shallow and clear, and the boatmen point out the famous rock formations as you pass.

  • Book ahead — raft tickets are limited and sell out fast in peak season; book a day in advance
  • Best time — morning is calmest; the light on the red cliffs is best in the late afternoon
  • Rain gear — the rafts have no cover; a light raincoat in wet season is smart

Tea: The Soul of Wuyishan

Wuyishan is one of the world's great tea regions — the original home of rock oolong (yancha), grown on the rocky slopes of the mountains. The most famous tea of all, Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe), comes from six ancient bushes on the cliffside that are so valuable they have their own insurance policy and armed guards. Visitors can:

  • Walk the Da Hong Pao scenic trail — a gentle 1-hour path that ends at the six original bushes
  • Visit a tea workshop — many local families open their workshops for tastings of rock oolong, from the affordable to the legendary
  • Climb to the Tea Cave — a short, steep hike to a cliff-side grove where monks once grew tea
  • Buy direct — tea bought in Wuyishan village is far cheaper and fresher than in big-city shops

Beyond the River: Peaks and Caves

  • Heavenly Tour Peak (Tianyou Feng) — the classic viewpoint overlooking the river's biggest bend; a moderate climb of about an hour
  • Tiger Roaring Rock (Huxiao Yan) — a dramatic peak with caves, springs and some of the best cliff views
  • One-Line-Sky (Yixiantian) — a cleft in the mountain so narrow that only a sliver of sky shows above — claustrophobes beware
  • Water Curtain Cave — a natural amphitheater where a waterfall drops past the cave mouth

Getting There and Combining

  • High-speed rail — Wuyishan East Station is on the Hefei–Fuzhou line; from Shanghai about 3 hours, from Fuzhou about 1 hour
  • Air — Wuyishan Airport has flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Xiamen and Guangzhou
  • Combine with — Wuyishan pairs naturally with Fujian's other highlights: the tulou earthen houses, Xiamen's Gulangyu Island, and the city of Quanzhou
