Qinghai's two famous lakes are different experiences of the same plateau: Qinghai Lake is an inland sea of deep blue with bird islands and grassland around it, and Chaka is a shallow salt flat whose surface mirrors the sky on still days. Both sit above 3,000 metres, both are best reached from Xining, and both reward timing more than equipment.

Qinghai Lake

China's largest lake is a place of scale: the water changes colour through the day, the surrounding grassland carries yaks and sheep, and the bird islands in the west attract migratory species in the warmer months. The classic approach is a drive along the southern shore with stops at the viewpoints, or a longer loop if you have two days.

Chaka Salt Lake

Chaka's draw is reflection: shallow brine over white salt crust, and when the wind drops the surface becomes a mirror. It is heavily visited, so the practical advice is to arrive early or late, walk away from the main entrance, and accept that the perfect mirror depends entirely on the weather.

Practical Notes

The altitude is real — over 3,000 metres — so allow a day in Xining to acclimatise, avoid strenuous activity on arrival, and carry water. The best months are June to September; winter is cold, windy and largely closed for tourism. A car and driver for two days is the sensible way to see both lakes.
