In the northeast corner of old Beijing stands the Lama Temple (Yonghegong) — the most important Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet, and one of the most atmospheric places in the city. It began as the residence of the Qing prince who would become the Yongzheng Emperor, was converted to a lamasery in 1744, and survives today as a working monastery where monks still live, study and chant. Its incense smoke, golden roofs and the enormous wooden Maitreya Buddha make it a highlight of any Beijing visit.

The Five Halls, Explained

• Yonghe Gate and the Hall of Heavenly Kings — the entrance hall with the smiling Maitreya and the Four Heavenly Kings
• Hall of Harmony and Peace (Yonghedian) — the main hall, with three golden Buddha statues and fine murals
• Hall of Everlasting Protection — dedicated to the Longevity Buddha and the Medicine Buddha
• The Wheel of the Law Hall — where monks gather for chanting; the great prayer wheels line the walls
• The Pavilion of Ten Thousand Happinesses (Wanfuge) — the final hall, home of the 26-meter Maitreya Buddha carved from a single sandalwood trunk

The 26-Meter Maitreya: The Star of the Temple

The Wanfuge Pavilion houses the temple's most famous treasure: a 26-meter-tall Maitreya Buddha carved from a single trunk of white sandalwood, with the remaining 8 meters hidden below ground. It is one of the largest wooden Buddha statues in the world, and was a gift from the 7th Dalai Lama in 1750. Standing before it, looking up, is one of those rare travel moments that stays with you.
