What Happened: The 1860 Destruction

Yuanmingyuan was begun in 1709 by the Kangxi Emperor and expanded over a century into a masterpiece of Chinese garden design — thousands of pavilions, lakes, artificial hills and the famous "Western Mansions" with their baroque fountains. In October 1860, at the end of the Second Opium War, British and French troops entered Beijing, looted the palace's treasures and set it on fire. The burning lasted days; the garden never recovered. The ruins have stood since as a symbol of China's "century of humiliation" — and today, the site is a national memorial and a place of quiet reflection.

• The Western Ruins area — the most photographed part: the marble arches and columns of the Western Mansions, including the famous "Sea of Wisdom" gate
