Hunan in 7 Days: Zhangjiajie, Fenghuang and Changsha
Peaks, Rivers and Chillies
Hunan offers three different trips in one province: the sandstone pillar landscapes around Zhangjiajie, the riverside old town of Fenghuang, and Changsha, a city with a serious food culture and good museums. The high-speed rail network connects them, so a week covers all three without rushing — though the mountains need at least two full days.
Days 1–2: Zhangjiajie
The national park is a landscape of vertical sandstone pillars, forested ravines and glass bridges, with cable cars and elevators doing the climbing. Two days is the minimum: one for the classic circuit, one for the quieter valleys or Tianmen Mountain's cliff roads and cableway. Stay in the town near the park entrance and start early — the crowds arrive mid-morning.
Days 3–4: Fenghuang
By road or rail south to Fenghuang, the riverside old town of stilt houses, stone lanes and bridges, best known for the view along the Tuo River and for the Miao and Tujia minority crafts in the surrounding villages. Mornings and evenings are the good hours; the middle of the day belongs to tour groups.
Days 5–7: Changsha
Finish in the provincial capital: the museum with the Han dynasty tomb finds, the old streets and, above all, the food — Hunan cooking is sour, smoked and seriously hot, and Changsha eats it at street level all day. Two nights give you a museum day, a food crawl and a slow morning before departure.
Practical Notes
Spring and autumn are the best seasons; Zhangjiajie's summer is hot and wet, and its winter can bring ice and cloud. Buy park tickets and cable-car tickets ahead in peak periods, pack rain gear for the mountains, and leave the mountains before the last cable car rather than planning to walk down.

Yes for this route: two days in Zhangjiajie, two in Fenghuang and its villages, and two or three in Changsha. Add days if you want to hike the park's longer trails.
When should I visit Zhangjiajie?
Spring and autumn for clear peaks and comfortable walking. Summer is hot, humid and busy; winter is quiet but can be icy, and cloud often hides the pillars.
What should I eat in Hunan?
Hunan cuisine: smoked pork, chilli-heavy stir-fries, fermented beans and rice noodles, with Changsha's street food being the best introduction. Expect real heat and ask for it milder if you need to.
