The Dongchuan Red Land, northeast of Kunming in Yunnan, is farmland that looks like a painting: soil that is rust-red from iron oxide, patchwork fields of green and white, and hills that fold into one another. It is a working agricultural landscape rather than a park, and the colour changes with the season, which is why photographers treat the timing as seriously as the location.
When the Colours Peak
The classic window is autumn - roughly September to November - when the crops ripen and the soil is exposed by harvest, giving the strongest contrast between red earth, golden crops and white buckwheat flowers. The area is visited along a loop of viewpoints, each with its own name and its own character: the most photographed include Luoxiagou for sunsets and Jinxiu Yuan for the sweeping fields.
