When Flying Beats the Train
China's rail network is fast and punctual, but it does not cover everything: the far west, the plateau destinations and the long north-south runs are still faster by air. Domestic aviation is busy, cheap and well organised, and once you know the booking and baggage conventions it is no harder than flying anywhere else.
Booking and Check-in
Tickets are booked online with a passport number, which is also your check-in document — the passport itself is the only ID you need, and mobile boarding passes are widely accepted. Allow time for the security check, which is thorough, and note that laptop batteries and power banks must be carried in the cabin rather than checked.
Baggage Rules
Domestic economy tickets typically include one checked bag of around 20 kg, with variations by fare class and airline; low-cost and discounted fares may include less or charge for luggage, so read the fare conditions rather than assuming. Carry-on limits are enforced more strictly than in Europe or North America, and liquids rules apply at security.
Airports and Timing
China's major airports are large: Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou each have multiple terminals, and domestic flights usually need 90 minutes to two hours from arrival at the terminal. Smaller regional airports are quick by comparison. Delays happen, most often from weather or air-traffic control, and summer thunderstorms and winter fog are the usual causes.
