City, Then Canal
Shanghai and the water towns belong together: the city gives you the delta's modern face and its nineteenth-century waterfront, and the canal towns an hour or two away give you the older, slower version of the same landscape. Five days split three and two works well, with the towns placed at the end so the trip finishes quietly.
Days 1–3: Shanghai
Start with the bund at dawn and the old city lanes around Yu Garden, then the museums and the former concession districts. Day two can be the Pudong skyline and a river crossing, with the evening on the bund for the lights. Day three is for the neighbourhoods: art districts, markets, and the local food that Shanghai does better than its reputation suggests.
Day 4: Zhujiajiao and Suzhou
A morning at Zhujiajiao, the closest of the canal towns, then on to Suzhou by rail for the gardens and the canals. Suzhou's classical gardens are the peak of the form and its canals still carry daily life; an afternoon and an evening here is the richest single stop on the route.
Day 5: A Water Town, Then Home
Finish in one of the smaller towns — Tongli, Xitang or Nanxun — where the day-trippers leave by evening and the lanes, bridges and canal houses come back to themselves. Stay a night if the schedule allows; the towns are at their best before breakfast and after sunset.
Practical Notes
Spring and autumn are the best seasons; the plum-rain weeks of early summer are humid and wet, and winter is cold and grey. The rail network makes Shanghai–Suzhou a 30-minute hop, and the towns are reachable by bus or car. Book hotels in the towns directly if you plan to stay overnight.
