The Peak Was Only Five Per Cent Above the Average
China Inbound Daily — 6 November 2026
Three days of Mid-Autumn border data add up to a quieter finding than the headlines: the peak was almost indistinguishable from the average. Six readings on what each figure counts, and what it leaves out.
Three Days, 6.709 Million Crossings
Border inspection agencies across China handled 6.709 million inbound and outbound passenger movements during the Mid-Autumn holiday, an average of 2.236 million a day and 16.8% more than the same holiday a year earlier. The heaviest single day was 26 September, at 2.342 million.
Set the busiest day beside the average and the difference is under five per cent. A holiday whose peak barely clears its own mean is not a surge; it is a plateau with the lid lifted slightly.
What it means: the crowded week is no longer confined to the red dates on the calendar. If a festival peak sits within a few points of a normal day, the date you choose matters less than the hour you land and the lane you are sent to.
Who the Growth Actually Came From
A 16.8% headline is an average, and an average of a mixed set hides its fastest parts. Movements by Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents rose 27.7%. Foreign nationals rose 37.7%, to 728,000 crossings. Mainland residents heading abroad grew more slowly, which pulls the total toward the middle.
What it means: the fastest-growing segment is the one that asks the most of a desk, because it arrives with different passports, different languages and different onward plans. A port absorbs that shift by re-cutting shifts and counters, not by pouring concrete. You see the result rather than the decision: the queue around you is less local than it was, and the passenger ahead of you is likelier to hold a passport like yours.
One in Three Walked Through the Waiver Lane
Among foreign nationals arriving over the holiday, 247,000 came in under a visa-free arrangement, 32.7% more than a year earlier. Against 728,000 foreign crossings, that is roughly one arrival in three. Nationwide, visa-free entries over the first eight months of the year were up 26.8%.
What it means: the waiver has moved from a side channel to a main one, and it is growing faster than the foreign total it sits inside. That relocates friction rather than deleting it. Eligibility is settled before the flight; what remains is the arrival card, the queue, and the address you write on it. Which entry rule fits your passport is still a separate question from how the hall behaves on the day.
Baiyun Holiday Traffic, Read as a Mix
At Guangzhou Baiyun, the three festival days from 25 to 27 September produced just over 165,000 crossings, with a single-day peak above 56,000. Foreign nationals made up more than 52,000 of them, 34.4% of the total, and visa-free arrivals passed 10,000, up 47.5% year on year.
What it means: 47.5% is the harder kind of growth, because it stands on a base that had already risen. It also describes the hall you will stand in during a festival week: roughly a third foreign, with the waiver lane carrying the largest single block. Two earlier pieces follow the same thread - how the holiday dividend shows up across three days, and the twenty minutes at the desk itself.
Thirty New Routes and One That Came Back
Between January and August, Baiyun opened or increased more than 30 international passenger routes, among them Delhi, Astana, Vladivostok and Luanda, and its international passenger volume rose about 18%. On 21 September China Southern restored the Guangzhou to Delhi link at five flights a week, six years after it stopped.
What it means: a waiver without a seat is only a promise. Capacity is what turns eligibility into arrivals, and the routes that change an itinerary are the ones that delete a connection rather than shorten a flight.
What the New Rules Made Routine
On 15 September the State Council regulation on exit and entry administration took effect, standardising inspection criteria nationwide and formalising a single-visit procedure for temporary entry permits. Guangzhou committed to holding Chinese citizens under 30 minutes at inspection. Kunming announced six facilitation measures, including one arrangement per tour group. For the combined festival period the Guangzhou border station expects about 560,000 crossings, 16% more, with Baiyun above 750,000 and foreigners near 45% of that. The Pazhou ferry terminal to Hong Kong reopened on 24 September.
What it means: read a pledge by its subject. The 30-minute commitment covers Chinese citizens; what a foreign visitor gains is the uniformity behind the counter and the one-stop permit. The 45% is the figure to watch, since it sits well above the 34.4% recorded during the festival days - that gap is what a trade fair does to an airport's passenger mix. Planning a fair week around those dates starts with the calendar, and semi-self-guided planning starts with the arrival day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a single-day peak of 2.342 million mean I should avoid that date?
Not on its own. The figure counts crossings, not people, and it adds arrivals to departures at every port. Because the peak sat under five per cent above the holiday average, that date was barely different from its neighbours. Your flight time and terminal shape the queue more than the calendar does.
If one arrival in three is visa-free, do I still need documents at the desk?
Yes. The waiver removes the visa, not the questions. Carry the address of your first night, a return or onward booking, and a clear account of your purpose. Officers check eligibility at the counter as well as at check-in, and a printed address resolves more conversations than a screenshot does.
Why report Baiyun separately when national totals already include it?
Because a national figure is a sum, and a gateway figure is a mix. The national numbers cannot tell you that foreigners were 34.4% of one airport's festival traffic and are expected near 45% during a trade fair. The second number predicts how long your arrival will take.
