Baiyun Second Act: Routes and Refunds, Not Runways

Oct 25,2026

China Inbound Daily — 25 October 2026

In August, 8.39 million people passed through Guangzhou Baiyun, the busiest single month at any Chinese airport since 2020. Six readings from the fortnight to 25 October, on a gateway whose constraint has moved from runway capacity to the airline list and the refund desk.

The Numbers That Settled the Ranking

Guangzhou Baiyun moved 43.33 million passengers in the first half of 2026, past Shanghai Pudong's 42.69 million, and took the national lead back. August carried the argument further: 8.394 million travellers, up 14.39% year on year, against Pudong's 8.314 million, the highest single month at any Chinese airport since 2020, on 52,400 aircraft movements, up 8.86%.

What it means: the capacity question is closed. Five runways and three terminals mean a slot can usually be found; what is still contested is who fills it. Arriving for the first time has its own guide; the question here is what the airport is being used for.

Thirty Routes, One Direction

Between January and August the airport opened or increased more than 30 international passenger routes. The new points read less like a legacy map than a forecast: Delhi, Kolkata, Astana, Haiphong, Sihanoukville, Kuching, Bishkek, Vladivostok, Luanda, Krasnoyarsk, Palu. International traffic grew about 18% over the period, August alone carried 1.7066 million international passengers, up 16.55%, and the international and regional network now passes 100 points.

What it means: management credits three forces - visa-free entry, the Canton Fair, and airlines moving aircraft here - and the list leans toward Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Australia-New Zealand by design. The effect on a trip is simpler than the strategy: a second-tier city is often one hop away, and the delta's own back catalogue, a three-day diaolou trail, sits two hours south of the terminal. Fair weeks still set the peak.

The North American Airline That Finally Came

Air Canada said on 3 September that it will fly Vancouver to Guangzhou from 4 May 2027, three times a week. Guangzhou becomes its third mainland point, and the first North American carrier to serve Baiyun. The airline chose Guangzhou over Beijing and Shanghai.

What it means: North American capacity into China has recovered more slowly than European and Gulf capacity, and this is the first crack in that pattern. For travellers from western Canada and the American west coast it becomes a direct option from spring 2027. Until then the connection runs through another hub, and an announced route is not a bookable one.

A Year Inside Terminal 3

Terminal 3 opened on 30 October 2025 with the fifth runway. It holds 683,300 square metres of floor space, close to 200 check-in counters, capacity for 120 million passengers in the near term and 140 million at the end of the build-out. Its border hall runs past 4,000 square metres, 2.7 times the old international hall, and is sized for 9 million international passengers by 2030. Terminal 1 closed in January for refurbishment; 11 domestic airlines moved in May.

What it means: the building is no longer the constraint, and paying for it is now the story - first-half net profit came in at 426 million yuan, down 43%. What a passenger notices is duller: which terminal the flight uses has changed twice this year. Moving between them is a fixed part of the plan now, not an afterthought.

Forty-Five Percent of a Holiday

The port crossed 10 million entries and exits in the first half, up 21% and a record for the period, drawing passengers from 196 countries and regions. Foreign national crossings reached about 1.75 million in the first quarter alone, up more than 36%. For the 24 September to 7 October window the border station projected over 750,000 crossings, up roughly 15%, with foreigners near 45% of them, on about 370 daily passenger flights, up 10%, with Phuket, Nha Trang and Chiang Mai added.

What it means: a port once defined by Chinese travellers leaving now tilts the other way, and 45% is not a holiday quirk but the shape of the traffic. The queue on the busiest day shows where the minutes go. Families arriving in that window tend to skip the city and head for the two parks south of Guangzhou.

Nineteen Thousand Forms in Five Weeks

Refund policy 2.0 ran its first month from 1 July to 8 August. Baiyun customs cleared about 19,000 departure refund forms worth roughly 100 million yuan, five times the forms and 1.5 times the value of a year earlier. From January to July the total passed 89,000 forms and 486 million yuan, up 7.5 times and 1.4 times. The city lists 1,800 refund shops and 16,000 key merchants set up for foreign cards.

What it means: refunding has moved from a specialist skill to a routine step, and that moves where a trip is spent - purchases bunch into the last kilometre before departure. The mechanics of the scheme decide whether the queue is worth joining at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book the Air Canada flight to Guangzhou now?

Not on the strength of the announcement. The route is stated for 4 May 2027 at three flights a week, and schedules load into reservation systems months before departure rather than eighteen months out. Treat it as a planning signal for spring 2027, and confirm the flight number with the airline before you build a trip around it.

Which terminal does my flight use while Terminal 1 is closed?

Check the booking rather than the memory. Terminal 1 closed in January 2026 for refurbishment and eleven domestic carriers moved to other terminals in May, so a terminal that was right last year may not be. The airline's own notice and the airport flight board both carry the answer, and both are worth a second look before departure.

Are the refund desks at Baiyun worth planning around?

Worth planning, not worth discovering at the gate. Customs cleared about 19,000 forms in the first five weeks of the new scheme, five times the previous year, and 1,800 shops in the city issue the paperwork. Keep the receipts together, buy where the shop is enrolled, and leave time at the desk before departure. We build the day around it.
