Ten countries supplied 62 percent of China's foreign arrivals in the first half of 2026: South Korea, Russia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, the United States, Japan, Mongolia and Australia. The mix matters more than the headline number, because it decides which routes, languages and services are worth building.
Visa-free entry is doing most of the work. Visa-free arrivals grew 30.6 percent year on year, well ahead of the 20.4 percent growth in foreign arrivals overall - and among the top ten, only the United States sits outside the visa-free or transit-exemption arrangements that now cover most European and Asian passports.
The longer view is also stronger than the recovery narrative suggests: China received 35.17 million inbound foreign visitors in 2025, above the 31.88 million of 2019. For travellers from the top-ten markets, that means more competition for the same berths and tickets in peak season, and more reason to book the fixed-capacity items - museum slots, rail seats and performance tickets - well ahead.
