China's River Cruises Draw More Foreign Travellers as Yangtze Load Factor Hits 79.5%

Sep 17,2026

Load Factors at Record Levels, and Foreign Passenger Growth

The China Tourism Academy released its 2026 report on the country's river cruise industry on September 16, and the numbers describe a sector in good health. From January to July, provincial-level cruises on the Yangtze ran at an average bed load factor of 79.5 percent — a high for the period — with the main Three Gorges route carrying 475,000 passengers, up 8.9 percent, and mid- and lower-reach routes up 55.3 percent to 23,000.

The sharpest growth is in foreign visitors. Hubei province's cruises carried 78,800 inbound passengers in the first half of 2026, up 62.47 percent year on year, within a total of 570,000 provincial cruise passengers. The province operates 16 provincial-level and 23 in-province cruises, with 218 high-end, environmentally friendly or new-energy vessels and 72 standardised wharves providing more than 31,000 berths.

The report frames river cruising as a slow-travel product — one that combines waterside sightseeing with onboard hospitality, which suits the longer stays and multi-city itineraries that inbound visitors are increasingly booking. For travellers, the practical takeaway is supply: more vessels, more standardised piers and a wider choice of routes than a few years ago.

  • Yangtze provincial cruises, January-July: 79.5 percent average load factor
  • Main Three Gorges (Chongqing-Yichang) route: 475,000 passengers, up 8.9 percent
  • Mid- and lower-reach routes: 23,000 passengers, up 55.3 percent
  • Hubei's cruises carried 78,800 foreign passengers in H1 2026, up 62.47 percent
Why are river cruises growing?

They offer a slow, unpack-once way to see the landscape, with meals and excursions included. That suits the longer itineraries and multi-city trips that recent inbound visitors are booking.

Which routes run?

The classic is the Three Gorges route between Chongqing and Yichang; the report also notes growing mid- and lower-Yangtze sailings, and China has other waterways such as the Pearl River system.

When should I book?

Peak seasons are spring and autumn, and the main routes sell out in holiday periods. Book two to three months ahead for the best cabins on the Three Gorges itineraries.
