Visa-Free Arrivals Now Account for 77.6 Percent of Foreign Entries
China's border inspection authorities processed 499 million cross-border movements in the first eight months of 2026, up 8.7 percent year on year, according to data presented at a migration-management forum in Lianyungang on September 10 and reported the following day. Foreign nationals made up 61.29 million of those movements, up 19.5 percent.
The visa-free share is the headline: 23.72 million foreign entries came without a visa in the period, 26.8 percent more than a year earlier and 77.6 percent of all foreign arrivals. China now applies unilateral visa-free entry to 50 countries and 240-hour visa-free transit to 57, through 65 open ports — a framework that media analysis describes as a structural change in how the country receives visitors rather than a short-term stimulus.
Transport data moves with it: 665,000 international aircraft movements, 306,000 vessel calls and 75,000 train movements were processed in the same eight months, with vehicle traffic up 15.6 percent. For travelers, the practical effect is a longer list of eligible itineraries — transit that ends in a multi-city stay, and island or regional entry schemes that skip the visa queue entirely.
