Fujian's Quiet Coast
Zhangzhou sits an hour south of Xiamen, and it is where Fujian's coast becomes less polished and more interesting: an old walled town with lanes and temples, a harbour whose emigrant history is written into its architecture, seafood villages along the shore, and the tulou — the Hakka earthen compounds — within a couple of hours inland.
The Old Town
Zhangzhou's old town is compact and quietly being restored: stone lanes, clan temples, arcaded shophouses and a riverfront that comes alive in the evening. It is best explored on foot over half a day, with a stop for the local noodles and the region's four-fruit soup.
The Coast and the Islands
The coastline south of the city holds fishing harbours, oyster beds and beaches that see few foreign visitors, with ferries to islands offshore. Dongshan Island is the best-known: a working fishing economy, a temple or two, and seafood restaurants where the catch decides the menu.
Tulou Country Inland
The Hakka counties north and west of Zhangzhou hold clusters of tulou — circular and square earthen buildings up to four storeys, built as fortified communal homes. They are UNESCO-listed, reachable by road in a day trip, and far quieter than the more famous clusters further west.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons; summer is hot, humid and typhoon-prone. Zhangzhou is on the high-speed rail line between Xiamen and Chaoshan, making it an easy stop, and the tulou need a car and driver for the day.
