Yuelu Mountain & Orange Island: Changsha's Cultural Heart
Yuelu Mountain & Orange Island: Changsha's Cultural Heart
Why Visit Yuelu Mountain & Orange Island
Yuelu Mountain is the green lung of Changsha, rising 300 meters above the west bank of the Xiang River. At its base sits Yuelu Academy, founded in 976 AD and still operating as part of Hunan University — one of the oldest continuously operating educational institutions in the world. Across the river, Orange Island (Juzizhou) stretches 5km through the middle of the Xiang. At its southern tip stands a 32-meter-long granite statue of a young Mao Zedong, his hair swept back by the river wind — the spot where he trained to swim and later famously crossed the Yangtze.
