Xishuangbanna: Rainforest, Elephants & Dai Culture — 4-Day Guide
Xishuangbanna: Rainforest, Elephants & Dai Culture — Complete 4-Day Guide
Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture — China's tropical frontier bordering Laos and Myanmar — is one of the country's most biodiverse regions and the homeland of the Dai people, an ethnic group with a culture more akin to Thailand and Laos than to Han China. This 4-day itinerary covers the prefecture's highlights: wild Asian elephant encounters, Dai village homestays, tropical rainforest hikes, and the largest night market in southern Yunnan. ChinaTravelPlus has operated in Xishuangbanna since 2021, specializing in responsible ecotourism.
Day 1: Jinghong City & Dai Culture
Arrive at Jinghong's Xishuangbanna Gasa Airport (JHG). Visit Zongfo Temple (总佛寺, free), the most important Theravada Buddhist temple in China, with its 22-meter golden Buddha and 500-year history. Afternoon: Dai Ethnic Garden (¥50) in Ganlanba — a living museum of five traditional Dai bamboo-stilt villages. Evening: Gaozhuang Night Market (nightly, 6:00 PM-midnight) — 300+ food stalls serving Dai-style BBQ, papaya salad, grilled fish wrapped in banana leaves, and sticky rice in bamboo tubes. Budget: ¥40-60 for dinner.
Day 2: Wild Elephant Valley
Wild Elephant Valley (¥60, 30 km north of Jinghong, 40-min taxi ¥80-100) is the best place in China to see wild Asian elephants. The valley is home to approximately 300 wild elephants (Xishuangbanna has roughly 380 total — 25% of China's population). A 4 km elevated boardwalk (flat, accessible) allows safe viewing of elephants coming to the river to drink and bathe. Best viewing times: 9:00-11:00 AM and 3:00-5:00 PM. Bring binoculars. The wild elephant museum (park entry included) explains conservation efforts. Note: Do not bring loose plastic bags or food that elephants might smell — they have been known to approach the boardwalk.
