Ask most travelers when to visit Xi'an and they will say spring or autumn. Winter is the insider's answer. The crowds around the Terracotta Warriors thin out, hotels drop to their lowest prices of the year, and two experiences appear that summer simply cannot offer: the City Wall Lantern Festival, a river of light running along the ancient ramparts, and the winter edition of the famous Song of Everlasting Sorrow performance at Huaqing Palace. Dry cold with indoor heating means it feels far more comfortable than the damp winters of southern China.
The City Wall Lantern Festival (2026)
Xi'an's lantern festival on the 600-year-old City Wall is the city's winter centerpiece. The 2026 edition, themed around national treasures and the new year, lights up from early January through mid-March, with its most spectacular clusters around Yongning Gate and Hanguang Gate. Evening is the time to go: walk the ramparts between giant lantern displays of zodiac animals, famous paintings and Tang-dynasty scenes, then look down over the old city's rooftops. Entry to the wall is around RMB 54, and a bike ride along the top by day is a classic alternative.
Huaqing Palace and the Winter Performance
An hour east of the city, Huaqing Palace sits at the foot of Mount Li, where hot springs have bubbled since the Tang dynasty — the very pools where Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei bathed. In winter the site runs a special cold-weather edition of The Song of Everlasting Sorrow, an outdoor dance performance over the palace lake, staged with winter costumes and heating tricks from early December to the end of February. Daytime visits (admission around RMB 108, valid two days) pair the palace with the nearby Terracotta Warriors, which are far more peaceful in winter.
