China has an unusual cost profile: the everyday layer is inexpensive, and the expensive layer is made up of things visitors buy under time pressure. Knowing which is which changes how a trip feels and what it costs.
What Is Genuinely Cheap
Local meals. A bowl of noodles, dumplings or a rice dish at a neighbourhood restaurant costs very little. Food is one of the cheapest parts of a China trip, and one of the best reasons to travel.
Metro and city transport. Urban rail is inexpensive, fast and signed in English in every major city. Airport express lines are the same story.
Museums and parks. Many major museums are free with advance reservation; city parks cost almost nothing; temple entries are modest.
Tea, bottled water and snacks. Convenience-store prices are low, which makes long travel days cheap.
High-speed rail, standard class. Per kilometre, it is a bargain compared with European rail.
What Is Expensive
Peak-window hotels. Chinese New Year and the first week of October: rates rise and the good rooms go first. The same room in the same city can cost multiples of its low-season rate.
Intercity travel at the last minute. Flights and rail seats bought on the day, especially around holidays.
Anything bought at a tourist site. Restaurants beside major attractions, bottled drinks at gates, souvenirs at the exit - all priced for convenience.
Imported brands. Imported food, wine and cosmetics carry duties and are often dearer than at home.
Private everything, all the time. Private vehicles and private guides are good value on some days, less so on days when public transport is easy.

Cheap: things locals buy daily. Expensive: things visitors buy in a hurry at the place they are standing.
