Tianyi Pavilion: China's Oldest Private Library in Ningbo
Tianyi Pavilion: China's Oldest Private Library in Ningbo
Why Visit Tianyi Pavilion
Built in 1561 by Ming Dynasty official Fan Qin, Tianyi Pavilion is China's oldest surviving private library and one of the oldest in the world. Fan Qin spent his life collecting books — rare manuscripts, local histories, imperial records — and built a purpose-designed library with a fireproof brick structure, a pond for water access, and strict rules for preservation. The collection grew to over 70,000 volumes in his lifetime. Today, through donations and acquisitions, it houses 300,000 ancient texts. The library is set in a classic Ming garden, making it a peaceful cultural retreat in the heart of Ningbo.
