Putuo Mountain: China's Sacred Buddhist Island on the East China Sea
Putuo Mountain: China's Sacred Buddhist Island on the East China Sea
Why Visit Putuo Mountain
Putuo Mountain is the only Buddhist sacred mountain in China that is an island. For over 1,000 years, pilgrims have crossed the East China Sea to reach this serene island of temples, golden beaches and forested hills. The island is dedicated to Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and the devotion is palpable: you'll see monks in saffron robes, pilgrims bowing at every temple, incense smoke rising through ancient camphor trees. Beyond the spiritual atmosphere, the coastal scenery is stunning — cliffs overlooking the sea, quiet beaches and panoramic viewpoints.
