Langshan: Hunan's UNESCO Danxia Wonderland

In the southwest corner of Hunan, near the border with Guangxi, Langshan (Mount Lang) is one of China's most dramatic — and least crowded — landscape parks. A UNESCO World Natural Heritage site (2010) as part of the China Danxia series, it is a land of giant red sandstone peaks, narrow rock corridors and mist-shrouded summits. If Zhangjiajie is Hunan's famous mountain, Langshan is its hidden cousin.

Park access and highlights verified August 2026.

The Five Highlights

  • Bajiao Village Peak (八角寨) — the signature view: a cluster of eight domed peaks, likened to "whales swimming in a sea of clouds" when fog rolls through
  • Heaven's First Alley (天一巷) — a 238-meter stone corridor so narrow you can touch both walls with outstretched arms; the park's most famous 'slot canyon'
  • Pepper Peak (辣椒峰) — a slender red pillar that looks exactly like a giant chili pepper
  • Camel Peak (骆驼峰) — a ridge shaped like a resting camel, with a vertiginous cliff path
  • Fuyi River rafting — bamboo rafts float between the red cliffs at the foot of the mountains

Practical Information

  • Getting there — Langshan is in Xinning County, Shaoyang; about 4-5 hours by road from Changsha or Guilin, or take a high-speed rail to Shaoyang then a transfer
  • Best time — spring and autumn for clear skies; summer mornings often bring the famous sea of clouds
  • Time — 1.5 to 2 days covers the main scenic areas; the park is large, so use the internal shuttle buses
  • Combine with — pair it with Guilin (2 hours away) or with a Changsha stop for Hunan food and history

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Langshan and how do I get there?

Langshan is in Xinning County, Shaoyang, southwest Hunan, about 4-5 hours by road from Changsha or Guilin. High-speed rail to Shaoyang plus a transfer works well.

How many days do I need at Langshan?

Allow 1.5-2 days. The main scenic areas are spread out, so use the internal shuttle buses and stay one night in Xinning town.

What makes the Tianyi Alley special?

Heaven's First Alley is a 238-meter stone slot canyon narrow enough to touch both walls at once — the most famous of Langshan's 'one-line-sky' corridors.

Is Langshan very crowded?

Far less than Zhangjiajie or Guilin. It is a UNESCO site but still relatively off the international radar, which is exactly its charm.
