Hunan Port Visa Reform: 2-Person Groups + Dual-Airport Access Makes It Easier to Visit
Hunan province has significantly expanded its port visa access with a new reform that allows groups of just 2 people to obtain visa-on-arrival at both Changsha and Zhangjiajie airports. For international travelers eyeing central China's iconic landscapes, this is a game-changer.
What Changed
Previously required 5+ travelers for a group port visa. Now just 2 people can apply together — perfect for couples and small groups.
Port visas are available upon arrival at both Changsha Huanghua Airport and Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport, covering eastern and western Hunan.
No need to visit an embassy in advance. Submit documents at the airport immigration desk on arrival.
Why This Matters
Hunan is home to some of China's most stunning natural wonders:
- Zhangjiajie National Forest Park — the inspiration for Avatar's floating mountains
- Fenghuang Ancient Town — a 1,300-year-old riverside town preserved in time
- Changsha — a UNESCO City of Media Arts with a legendary food and nightlife scene
- Mount Heng — one of China's five sacred Taoist mountains
Practical Tips for Using the Hunan Port Visa
Valid passport (6+ months), return/onward ticket, hotel booking confirmation, and 2-person group itinerary.
Typically 30–60 minutes at the airport. Apply at the visa-on-arrival counter before baggage claim.
Fly into Changsha (2 days) → high-speed rail to Zhangjiajie (3 days) → depart from Zhangjiajie airport.
Hunan's Inbound Numbers
Hunan has already served 1,521 tax refund applications worth 55.99 million yuan across 59 countries — and with this visa reform, inbound numbers are expected to accelerate further in 2026.
