Huangguoshu Waterfall: Guizhou's Great Cascade

Sep 18,2026

The Water Curtain

Huangguoshu is the largest waterfall system in Asia — a main fall of about 67 metres across nearly the same width, with smaller cascades fanning out around it — and it is unusual among the world's great falls because visitors can walk behind the curtain, through a cave-like passage cut across the rock. The site is a full day rather than a glance, and it works best as an overnight stop rather than a there-and-back from Guiyang.

The Falls and the Circuit

The main fall is the centrepiece, but the surrounding scenic area holds a series of smaller falls, rapids and pools along a walking route with steps, bridges and viewpoints. Allow three to five hours on foot, with the water curtain walk and the classic viewpoint as the two set pieces. Waterproofs matter: the spray reaches the paths even on calm days.

When to Go

The falls are at their most powerful from June to October, when summer rain swells the flow and the spray can soak everything within fifty metres. In the dry season the volume drops but the site is quieter and the water clearer; spring and autumn are the best compromise, with manageable crowds and a strong flow.

Practical Notes

The site is about two hours by road from Guiyang, with rail connections to Anshun and coaches from there. Stay overnight in the area if you can: the early morning is the only time the paths are quiet. Bring shoes with grip, expect steps, and plan for wet weather regardless of the season.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Huangguoshu need?

Half a day for the main falls and the walking circuit, a full day if you add the surrounding scenic spots. An overnight in the area makes the early morning possible.

When is the best time to see the waterfall?

June to October for maximum flow; spring and autumn for a strong flow with smaller crowds. Winter is quieter but the water volume is lower.

How do I get to Huangguoshu?

By road from Guiyang (about two hours) or by rail to Anshun and then by coach or taxi. Most visitors combine it with Guizhou's villages on a longer route.
