Hengshan Mountain: Climbing China's Southern Sacred Mountain
Hengshan Mountain: Climbing China's Southern Sacred Mountain
Why Visit Hengshan Mountain
Hengshan is one of China's Five Great Sacred Mountains — the Southern Sacred Mountain, associated with fire, summer and the mythical Zhurong. At 1,300m, it's the most accessible of the five sacred peaks, just 30 minutes from Changsha by high-speed rail. The mountain has been a pilgrimage site for over 2,000 years, with temples from both Taoist and Buddhist traditions coexisting peacefully. The Nanyue Grand Temple at the base is a stunning complex. The climb passes through bamboo groves, ancient pine forests and mist-shrouded temples.
