Just 30 minutes from the heat of Fuzhou city, the cool hill station of Guling (Kuliang) was once a summer retreat for foreign consuls, missionaries and merchants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. More than 300 stone villas survive from that era, tucked into the pine-covered hills. Today Guling is famous for a different reason: it is where US President Xi-era diplomacy met its most personal story — the descendants of American families who summered here have returned to reconnect with their roots, and the story of Guling has become a symbol of people-to-people friendship.

A Summer Colony with a Human Story

From the 1880s, foreign residents of Fuzhou — mostly American and British — built summer homes on the cool slopes of Guling to escape the city's brutal summer heat. The colony grew into a full community with churches, a clinic, a post office and even tennis courts. Generations of children grew up here, and the family albums of that era are filled with photos of Guling summers. After 1949 the colony faded, but the villas and the memory remained.

In 1992, a letter from a Chinese-American woman seeking the home of her American childhood friend led to the rediscovery of Guling's story — and to a series of return visits by descendants that have kept the friendship story alive ever since.
