Guangzhou 3-Day Itinerary: Cantonese Food, Architecture & Pearl River Views

Guangzhou — capital of Guangdong, terminus of the ancient Maritime Silk Road, and home to a culinary tradition recognized by UNESCO — is China's most underrated travel destination. With 2,200 years of history, a 600-meter tower, and arguably the best food in East Asia, this megacity of 19 million deserves a place on every traveler's itinerary. This 3-day guide is built from years of on-the-ground experience, personally tested routes, and candid feedback from hundreds of international visitors.

Why Trust This Guide

ChinaTravelPlus has operated in Guangzhou since 2018, designing private cultural tours for over 3,000 international visitors from 47 countries. Every restaurant and attraction in this guide has been personally tested by our team within the last 3 months. Our guides are native Cantonese speakers with 8-15 years of experience, holding national certifications from China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism. We do not accept commissions from restaurants — every recommendation is based solely on quality.

Walk 5 minutes to the Five Rams Statue — Guangzhou's mascot since 1959. Legend says five celestial goats descended carrying grain to end a famine. Arrive by 8:30 AM for soft morning light.

Climb to Zhenhai Tower (镇海楼, ¥10 entry), a five-story Ming Dynasty watchtower built in 1380. It houses the Guangzhou Museum with exhibits tracing 2,200 years of history. Must-sees: the Nanyue King's jade burial suit (206 BC) and Han Dynasty ceramic ship models. English audio guides available (¥20 deposit). Allow 3 hours.

Lunch (12:30 PM – 1:30 PM): Dim Sum at Panxi Restaurant

Panxi Restaurant (泮溪酒家, 文昌南路2号), a Guangzhou landmark since 1947. The Garden Hall features Yingde rockeries, a 50-year-old koi pond, and carved wooden pavilions. Must-order: Har Gow (¥38), Cheung Fun (¥28), Pai Gu (¥32), Dan Tat (¥24), pan-fried dumplings (¥28). Budget: ¥80-120/person. Ask for a second-floor window seat.

Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM): Chen Clan Academy & Liwan
