Why Metro Is the Best Way to Explore Guangdong

Guangdong's metro systems are clean, fast, air-conditioned, and remarkably cheap. For international travelers, they offer three unbeatable advantages:

1. Full English support. Every station name, every announcement, and every ticket machine offers English. You will never be lost.

2. Coverage. Between them, Guangzhou and Shenzhen Metro reach virtually every tourist attraction, shopping district, and food street worth visiting. Add the intercity railways, and you can travel from Guangzhou to Shenzhen in under 30 minutes.

3. Price. A typical metro ride costs ¥2–10 ($0.30–$1.40). A cross-city journey that would cost ¥80+ by taxi costs ¥7 by metro.

Guangzhou Must-Ride Routes for Tourists

Route 1: Historic Guangzhou (Half Day)

Line 2 → Line 1

Haizhu Square (Line 2) → walk to Shamian Island — the European colonial quarter with tree-lined streets and 19th-century architecture. Then take Line 2 to Gongyuanqian, transfer to Line 1, exit at Chen Clan Academy — a stunning example of Lingnan architecture with intricate wood carvings and ceramic decorations.

Continue on Line 1 to Changshou Lu, walk to Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street for traditional Cantonese snacks and shopping.

Route 2: Modern Guangzhou (Half Day)

Route 3: Family Fun (Full Day)

Shenzhen Must-Ride Routes for Tourists

Route 1: Tech and Innovation (Half Day)

Line 11 → Line 2

Take Line 11 to Houhai, walk to the Shenzhen Bay Park — a 13-km waterfront promenade with views of the Hong Kong skyline across the bay. Visit the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art nearby.

Take Line 2 to Sea World — not an aquarium but a vibrant expat district centered around the Minghua ship, a retired cruise vessel converted into a hotel and entertainment complex.

Route 2: Theme Parks (Full Day)

Line 1

Take Line 1 to Window of the World — a 48-hectare park with 130 miniature replicas of world landmarks (Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, Pyramids). Next door is Happy Valley, Shenzhen's largest amusement park.

Route 3: Art and Design (Half Day)

Take Line 4 to Civic Center, then Line 7 to OCT Loft — a former factory district converted into Shenzhen's creative hub with galleries, cafés, design studios, and street art.

Cross-Border: Shenzhen to Hong Kong by Metro

This is one of the most useful metro connections for international travelers. Two border crossings are accessible by metro:

Luohu Crossing (Line 1)

  • Take Line 1 to Luohu station
  • Follow signs to the Luohu Border Control Point
  • Walk across the bridge to Hong Kong's Lo Wu station
  • Connect to Hong Kong MTR East Rail Line
  • Travel time to Central Hong Kong: ~45 minutes
  • Operating hours: 6:30 AM – 12:00 AM

Futian Crossing (Line 4)

  • Take Line 4 to Futian Checkpoint station
  • Cross to Hong Kong's Lok Ma Chau station
  • Connect to Hong Kong MTR East Rail Line
  • Less crowded than Luohu, recommended during peak times

Important: You need a valid Hong Kong entry permit or visa-free eligibility. Mainland China's visa-free entry does not cover Hong Kong — they have separate immigration systems.

Airport Connections

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN)

  • Metro Line 3 (North Extension) connects the airport to the city center
  • Airport South Station → Tiyu Xilu (city center): 50 minutes, ¥10
  • First train: 6:10 AM, last train: 11:00 PM
  • Trains run every 5–8 minutes

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX)

  • Metro Line 11 connects the airport to the city center
  • Airport Station → Futian (CBD): 35 minutes, ¥7
  • First train: 6:30 AM, last train: 11:30 PM
  • Express service available (fewer stops, 25 minutes to Futian)

Payment Methods: Transit QR Code, Transport Cards, and Cash

Option 1: Transit QR Code (Recommended)

The easiest and most convenient payment method. Use Alipay or WeChat Pay to generate a transit QR code that you scan at the turnstile. No need to buy a physical card or ticket.

📖 Read our complete Transit QR Code Tutorial →

Quick setup: 1. Open Alipay → search "Transport Code" (出行码) 2. Select your city (Guangzhou or Shenzhen) 3. A QR code appears — scan it at the turnstile 4. Fare is deducted automatically after you exit

Option 2: Transport Card (Yang Cheng Tong / Shenzhen Tong)

Available at station service counters and convenience stores. ¥20 deposit + whatever credit you add. Works on metro, buses, and some ferries.

Option 3: Single-Journey Ticket

Buy from ticket machines at every station. Machines accept cash (¥1 coins and ¥5/10 notes) and some accept Alipay/WeChat. Select your destination station, pay, and receive a token or paper ticket.

Note: Ticket machines sometimes run out of coins. The transit QR code eliminates this problem entirely.

Dos and Don'ts on Guangdong Metro

Do: - ✅ Let passengers exit before boarding - ✅ Keep your transit QR code ready before reaching the turnstile - ✅ Stand on the right side of escalators (walk on the left) - ✅ Carry your passport — random security checks occasionally require ID - ✅ Use the English-language metro map app (search "Guangzhou Metro" or "Shenzhen Metro" in your app store)

Don't: - ❌ Eat or drink on the train (fines up to ¥500) - ❌ Take large luggage during peak hours (7:30–9:30 AM, 5:30–7:30 PM) - ❌ Take photos of other passengers without permission - ❌ Assume all stations have restrooms — many don't (use facilities in shopping malls near exits) - ❌ Try to force doors — they close quickly and do not reopen
