Golden Week 2026: Surviving and Enjoying China's National Day Holiday

Aug 10,2026

What Golden Week Actually Means

National Day celebrates the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1, and in 2026 the holiday runs October 1–7 — seven days that trigger the biggest domestic travel wave of the year. Hundreds of millions of Chinese travelers hit the road, rail and skies at once.

That sounds like a reason to avoid China in early October. The smarter take: Golden Week is spectacular if you plan around it — and genuinely miserable if you don't. Here's how to do it right.

What to Expect (Honestly)

Trains and flights sell out fast. High-speed rail tickets go on sale roughly two weeks before departure and the popular routes vanish within hours. Book the moment the window opens, and always secure return tickets before you arrive.

Top sights become queues. The Forbidden City, West Lake, Terracotta Warriors and Bund draw enormous crowds. Time-slot tickets are mandatory at many attractions — book them days ahead, not on the day.

Hotels double in price at hot destinations and fill completely in central locations. Mid-range hotels in second-tier cities stay affordable; big-name spots do not.

Highways clog on the first and last days (October 1 and 7). Travel mid-holiday — October 3–5 — for the calmest movement.

Reverse Tourism: The Secret Weapon

Chinese travelers call it "reverse tourism": skipping the famous sights in favor of smaller, cheaper, calmer places. It works just as well for foreigners.

Instead of the Forbidden City, try Pingyao or Kaifeng for ancient-town atmosphere. Instead of West Lake, try Qiandao Lake or Shaoxing. Instead of the Bund, try Suzhou or Yangzhou. You'll get better hotels, shorter lines and the same festival atmosphere.

If you do head to a famous destination, stay inside the core area (hotel within walking distance of the sight) — it transforms the experience by letting you visit at 7am and 9pm when the day-trip crowds are gone.

Practical Golden Week Survival Guide

Book in this order: trains (day one of the window) → hotels (two weeks out, cancellable) → attraction time-slots → then your daily plan. Everything else can be improvised.

Carry two forms of payment — Alipay/WeChat Pay linked to a working card, plus a physical Visa/Mastercard and some cash as backup. Merchant payment systems get strained at peak; a fallback saves you from awkward moments.

Keep your hotel address in Chinese and know your next train number. If anything breaks — a missed train, a full hotel, a failed payment — you're never stuck: that's exactly the kind of thing our on-call travel support handles.

Visas and entry: if you're coming in for the holiday, confirm your visa or visa-free eligibility early — and note that consulate and processing times get longer in September.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it a bad idea to travel in China during Golden Week?

Not if you plan smartly — book trains, hotels and tickets in advance and consider a smaller city. Spontaneous travel during Golden Week is where the pain lives.

When do Golden Week trains go on sale?

Roughly two weeks before departure. With the holiday starting October 1, book in mid-September the moment the window opens, especially for Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Xi'an routes.

Which cities should I avoid?

Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an and Zhangjiajie draw the heaviest crowds. They're still doable if you book time-slots and stay central — or swap them for Pingyao, Suzhou, Yangzhou, Shaoxing or Qiandao Lake.

Can I combine Golden Week with a Mid-Autumn trip?

Yes — in 2026, taking September 28–30 off creates a 13-day stretch from September 25 to October 7. Expect elevated crowds through the whole period and book even earlier.
