Detian Falls and the Guangxi Border
The Waterfall Between Two Countries
Detian Falls, in Guangxi's south-west, is the largest transnational waterfall in Asia: a wide curtain of water that drops across the border between China and Vietnam, with the river continuing on the far side into the Vietnamese tier. The falls are the centrepiece of a scenic area that also takes in karst peaks, river sections and border villages.
Water and Season
The flow decides the experience. From May to October the rainy season fills the river and the falls roar, with spray visible from the viewing platforms; in the dry months the water drops to a series of thinner cascades and the rock shows through. Both are impressive, but the rainy season is what people mean by "the biggest waterfall in Asia".
The Scenic Area and the Boat
A boardwalk runs along the Chinese side with several platforms, and a boat takes visitors close enough to feel the spray and to see the falls from the river. Above the falls, the landscape opens into karst peaks and farmland, and the border itself is marked along the water.
Practical Notes
Detian is reached by road from Nanning or Chongzuo (three to four hours), usually as an overnight trip: the falls are best in the early morning before the coach groups arrive. Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons, and the site pairs naturally with the karst scenery and old towns elsewhere in Guangxi.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to see Detian Falls?
May to October for maximum flow; the dry season gives a gentler, clearer waterfall and fewer visitors. Early morning is best at any time of year.
How do I get there?
By road from Nanning or Chongzuo, about three to four hours. Most visitors stay overnight locally, since the day trip makes for a long return journey.
What else is nearby?
Karst peaks and border villages, the town of Chongzuo, and - on a longer Guangxi route - the old towns and rice terraces further east.
