The White That Traveled

Dehua, in the hills of Fujian, made a porcelain so distinctive that European collectors named it before they knew where it came from: blanc de Chine, the white of China. It is a warm ivory rather than a cold white, dense and smooth, and in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it was exported in enormous quantities — figures of deities, tableware, cups and animals — shaping European ideas of Chinese porcelain as much as Jingdezhen's blue-and-white did. The kilns are still working, and they remain a family trade.

How Dehua Porcelain Is Made

The craft runs on local clay and a firing regime that is unusually hard to get right: the body is fine-grained and highly plastic, which allows detailed modelling, and the glaze is thin and translucent, so imperfections have nowhere to hide. Figures are often modelled by hand or from multi-part moulds, assembled, retouched and then fired; the classic forms — the seated Guanyin, the laughing monk, delicate cups — depend on that combination of simple material and demanding process.

Where to Watch It in Dehua

The town's ceramics museums and the surviving workshops explain the whole sequence from clay preparation to glaze and kiln, and several ateliers welcome visitors who arrive to watch rather than buy. Because the industry is small and family-run, a studio visit is easy to arrange and usually generous: the maker will explain why one glaze runs and another does not, and how a figure survives firing without cracking.

Buying and Caring for It

Dehua pieces travel well if packed properly: the material is strong for its thinness, and studios box and wrap for air travel. Look at the glaze in daylight — genuine pieces have a soft, slightly translucent surface that reveals the modelling beneath — and ask whether a figure is hand-modelled or mould-cast, since both exist and the price difference is real. Reputable pieces carry a maker's or studio's mark.

Planning the Visit

Dehua is an easy extension of Fujian's coastal cities: Xiamen and Quanzhou are close by high-speed rail, and the route combines naturally with Gulangyu's lanes, Quanzhou's puppetry and the province's tea country. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, and a single day covers a museum and one or two workshops without rushing.
