Chengdu Pandas + Zhangjiajie: China's Nature Route for Indonesian Travelers

Not every Indonesia traveler to China wants the history-and-museum route. For families and nature lovers, the Chengdu + Zhangjiajie combination is one of the most spectacular trips in the country: giant pandas in the morning, and the towering sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie — the real-life inspiration for the floating mountains in Avatar — a day later. Both are reachable from Indonesia via direct flights to Chengdu, with a short flight between the two.

Panda viewing tips and Zhangjiajie access verified August 2026.

Chengdu: The World's Best Place to See Pandas

Chengdu is the hometown of the giant panda, and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the best place on earth to see them up close. Go early: pandas are most active in the morning before the heat of the day. The base is a 30-minute drive from downtown Chengdu, and half a day is enough for the full circuit — including the panda nursery, where you can watch cubs being fed.

  • Best time — arrive at opening (7:30am) to catch the pandas eating bamboo; by 10am many are asleep
  • Getting there — taxi or Didi from downtown Chengdu, about 30–40 minutes
  • Combine with — the Wenshu Monastery and People's Park teahouse for a full day

Zhangjiajie: The Avatar Mountains

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is China's first national forest park and one of its most photographed landscapes — thousands of quartz-sandstone pillars rising out of the mist, famously used as the visual model for the floating Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar. The park is a 45-minute flight from Chengdu, with direct flights to Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport.

  • Must-do — the Bailong Elevator (the world's tallest outdoor elevator) up to the pillar-top walkways, and the glass skywalk at Tianmen Mountain
  • Best season — April–October; the park is spectacular after rain when the mist rolls between the pillars
  • Days needed — 2 days is comfortable: one for the forest park, one for Tianmen Mountain

Putting It Together: 6-Day Route

  • Day 1: fly into Chengdu, evening teahouse and hotpot (ask for the mild broth)
  • Day 2: panda base morning, Wenshu Monastery afternoon
  • Day 3: fly Chengdu to Zhangjiajie, afternoon Tianmen Mountain skywalk
  • Day 4: full day Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Bailong Elevator + pillar walkways)
  • Day 5: morning glass bridge (Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon), fly out to your next stop

This route pairs China's two most family-wowing natural sights with easy logistics — a perfect first China trip for Indonesian travelers who want the outdoors, not just the museums.
