Not every Indonesia traveler to China wants the history-and-museum route. For families and nature lovers, the Chengdu + Zhangjiajie combination is one of the most spectacular trips in the country: giant pandas in the morning, and the towering sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie — the real-life inspiration for the floating mountains in Avatar — a day later. Chengdu: The World's Best Place to See Pandas

Chengdu is the hometown of the giant panda, and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the best place on earth to see them up close. Go early: pandas are most active in the morning before the heat of the day. The base is a 30-minute drive from downtown Chengdu, and half a day is enough for the full circuit — including the panda nursery, where you can watch cubs being fed.
