The Sacred Mountain That Sleeps in Winter

Changbai Mountain, on the border of Jilin and North Korea, is a volcano that refuses to be ordinary. • Dress for the summit — the crater is cold and windy even by Northeast standards; layers, a windproof shell, goggles and hand warmers are essential
• Check the weather — the summit road closes in heavy snow or wind; be flexible by a day and ask about the north vs west slope (the west slope has a gentler approach)
• Season — December to February for snow and skiing; rime conditions are best after a sharp cold snap

Changbai fits naturally into a Jilin winter loop: Rime Island near Jilin City, the Beidahu and Songhuahu ski resorts, and Changbai itself. High-speed rail and good roads link the region, and a week covers it without rush. The mountain's mix of nature, snow and hot springs makes it the most complete single winter destination in the Northeast.
