Beijing

Beijing City is an autonomously governed municipal district and is located in the northeastern part of China at a distance of 43.5m above sea level. The conditions in Beijing are of the continental sort, with cold and dry winters in addition to hot summers. In January the temperature reaches 14 degree Celsius and is the coldest month of the year while July with a temperature of 26 degree Celsius is the warmest.

Beijing has a total area of 16808 sq km or approximately 6500 sq mi, extending 160 kilometers from east to west and more than 180 kilometers north to south. There are 18 districts and counties in Beijing with Dongcheng, Xicheng, Xuanwu, Chongwen, Chaoyang, Haidian, Fengtai and Shijingshan in the suburbs and Fangshan, Mengtougou, Changping, Tongxian, Shunyi, Daxing, Huairou, Miyun, Pinggu and Yianqing in the outer suburbs. Beijing has a population of approximately 12 million.

In ancient China, the ruler was considered as the "Son of Heaven", who governed matters on the earth for the heavenly authority. As a mark of respect to the heaven, rituals for sacrifices to heaven were exceedingly vital to the emperor. The Temple of Heaven which is in Beijing was constructed for the adoration of heaven and entreaties for good yields. A double wall surrounds the temple.

Similarly renowned as the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace is named "Yi He Yuan" or Garden of Nurtured Harmony in Chinese. It is thus far the best maintained and the biggest majestic gardens in China. Situated close to Beijing University, it is a wonderful spot to look for a break from the summer heat.
